What is Virtual Compute Environment™?
Commodity hardware has been decreasing in price
and increasing in performance yearly. The level of performance now available
in commodity hardware is sufficient for many workloads. As each server is
typically sized for peak load, there is often excess capacity available
that cannot be used by other applications in the data center.
The 3Leaf Systems Virtual Computing Environment™ enables the dynamic
allocation of commodity server resources in a manner transparent to existing
operating systems, applications, data center operations, and security paradigms.
The 3Leaf Systems Virtual Compute Environment™ consists of a roadmap
of products that addresses multiple levels of data center virtualization.
The first product, the V-8000 Virtual
I/O Server, replaces each compute node’s storage and network I/O
with a single, high speed, redundant, and fault tolerant fabric, converting
each compute node into a diskless and stateless commodity server with centrally
managed bandwidth. Thus, each compute node costs far less to put into service,
allows for better control of network bandwidth, and is more flexible, robust,
and reliable.
The V-8000 features the capabilities expected in an enterprise data center,
like security, load balancing, failover, and high quality of service through
fine-grained bandwidth management. The ability to diagnose problems from
a central location simplifies troubleshooting. The V-8000 is managed by
a set of platform independent interfaces.
The 3Leaf Systems’ Virtual Compute Environment™ brings exciting
benefits to all three server tiers in an enterprise data center. Its implementation
can significantly reduce capital expense and extend the performance benefits
of a shorter life cycle consistent with commodity servers.
