Windows 10 has a feature that let us turn our PC into a mobile hotspot. Therefore, we are able to share our internet connection with other devices via Wi-Fi. This is a useful feature in cases like when we are connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to share it with other devices but have forgotten the password. However, some Windows 10 users are facing issues that prevent them from sharing the connection. Right now, we will show you how to fix the problems that prevent you from sharing your internet connection on Windows 10.
If we go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot but cannot turn on the mobile hotspot on Windows, we will get a notification telling us it is impossible to set up the hotspot, so we need to turn on the Wi-Fi.
Follow these steps to fix the problems that prevent you from sharing the internet connection on Windows 10
There may be several reasons behind the error, but first of all we need to check if the issue with the access point is caused by our PC or the device we are trying to share the connection with. We can try turning on the mobile hotspot or access point to share the connection and connect another device. If the device is able to get connected, then the other device is the one with the problem. However, if the same device cannot get connected, then the PC is the one to blame.
We will now have to check if the Wi-Fi (or wired) network we are connected to is working correctly. If everything is good, then we will have to run the network adapter troubleshooter, which is a tool provided by Microsoft that can be found in Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Once we run it, the system itself will start checking if there is a problem preventing us from sharing our internet connection with other devices. If that is the case, the tool will try to fix it automatically.
If the problem persists, we can update the network card’s driver. In order to do so, we have to open Windows 10’s Device Manager, find the adapter, right-click it and choose the Update driver option.
Another possibility is to check the adapter’s settings to see if there is an option there about sharing the internet connection, allowing users on other networks to use our PC’s internet connection. We have to go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Change adapter options, and then we right-click the network we are connected to in order to go into its Properties. Once we are there, in the Sharing tab we have to make sure to mark the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection option. We click Ok so the changes are saved and check if everything works correctly and the connection can be shared.
